Euro 2024: Gakpo inspires Netherlands to victory over Poland

Cody Gakpo was on the scoresheet for the Netherlands as they defeated Poland 2-1 in a nail-biting Group D encounter on Sunday afternoon in Hamburg.

The Poles were the ones to draw first blood through Adam Buska’s header from a Piotr Zielinski corner kick in the 16th minute.

The Dutch wound however respond through Gakpo and his effort from outside the penalty area which took a deflection off Jan Bednarek in the 29th minute.

It was the 10th international goal for the 25-year-old, who is of Togolese descent. He has now scored in his last four games at the FIFA World Cup and Euros combined, becoming the third player in the 21st century to do so after Portuguese maestro Cristiano Ronaldo and Spain talisman Alvaro Morata.


The game remained 1-1 until the 83rd minute when former Manchester United forward Wout Weghorst clinched finished off Nathan Ake’s assist. Ake, who is of Ivory Coast heritage, also set up Gakpo for the first goal.

The result gave the Netherlands early control of Group D with France taking on Austria in the other group game on Monday night.
