2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Sports Minister Enoh demands swift action from NFF & Finidi George

Nigeria’s Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, has demanded urgent steps be taken from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to ensure that the Super Eagles qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Enoh also demanded that the issues that have hindered high performances and growth of Nigerian football be sorted out in an emergency meeting held at his office alongside the NFF top executives.

The meeting centered on various areas including the performance of the current Super Eagles coach of Finidi George, the competence of both the NFF Technical Committee and Technical Department, and the discipline of players in the national team camp, amongst others.

The Minister and the NFF also deliberated on the introduction of new crop of Nigerian players to ensure the best legs represent the country at every given time.

The further meeting delved into other more substantive matters said to be holding down Nigerian football development, including the expansion of the present membership of the NFF Congress to make for more inclusive and greater representation.

Enoh also gave the team of NFF officials and its technical team one week to present a comprehensive position indicating the positive progressive steps that have been taken to get the team ready for the next round of competitive matches.

The minister also frowned at the current position of Nigeria’s current position in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where they are second from bottom, as unacceptable.

Although matches in the World Cup qualifiers will not hold till March next year, there are indications that the NFF have been tasked to hire a foreign technical adviser ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
