Senegal’s Diatta banned for derogatory AFCON 2023 comments

Senegal midfielder Krepin Diatta has been hit with a four-game ban and fine for his derogatory comments about the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Diatta featured prominently for Aliou Cisse’s team in Ivory Coast but could not control his anger after their elimination to host nation Ivory Coast in the round of 16.

The Monaco star slammed CAF as being corrupt and he blamed Gabonese referee Pierre Atcho for Senegal’s early exit in the knock-out phase.

Despite dominating Group C with nine points from three games, the Teranga Lions failed to defend their 2021 AFCON trophy in Ivory Coast after losing 5-4 on penalties to the eventual champions.

CAF Disciplinary Committee, on Wednesday,  slammed Diatta with a four-game ban with two games suspended and he will pay a fine of $16,329.88.

The 24-year-old will consequently miss Senegal’s next two official games that will be the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Democratic Republic of Congo and Mauritania in June.
