AFCON 2023 Exclusive: There is nothing special about Super Eagles – Semi Ajayi

Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi has revealed that there is nothing special about the team until after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

The West Bromwich Albion centre-back has played every minute of Nigeria’s games in Ivory Coast and he believes success in the continental tournament will qualify the current Super Eagles as being special.

Nigeria are hoping to lift their fourth AFCON title in Ivory Coast, which would bring an end to a decade-long trophy draught since their last triumph in 2013.

“We are not special but hopefully, after the end of the tournament we can say that,” Ajayi told Afrosport.

“We have not seen the full potential of this team yet because there are too many talents in the team. There is a lot to come and when it clicks, everyone will say we are a special team.”

Nigeria are second in Group A at the ongoing AFCON, level on four points with leaders Equatorial Guinea.

They face bottom-placed Guinea-Bissau at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium on Monday and Ajayi has affirmed that the team’s main focus is on the Djurtus.

He added: “Every game in the tournament is massive and we are approaching our opponents game by game.

“We have got another plan in place and we are looking to get maximum points. The focus is on Monday and we are not looking beyond that.”
