AFCON 2023: Ivory Coast government declare public holiday for Nigeria match

The government of Ivory Coast has declared Thursday, January 18 as a public holiday as part of efforts to mobilise support for the country’s national team in their match against Nigeria.

The Ivorian government ordered that all government ministries and schools be closed to allow Ivorians watch and cheer the Elephants to victory in their second match at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Hosts Ivory Coast secured a comfortable win in the opening game of the competition with a 2-0 win against Guinea-Bissau on Saturday.

The Elephants could secure qualification for the round of 16 with a win against Nigeria at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpe in Abidjan.

Afrosport can confirm the streets in Abidjan were empty on Thursday morning with regards to the government’s directive as the Elephants and the Super Eagles clash for the seventh time in AFCON.
