AFCON 2023: Koulibaly reveals Senegal’s historic mission in Ivory Coast

Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly said they will approach each of their group fixtures like a final as they aim to defend their Africa Cup of Nations trophy.

Aliou Cisse’s men will kick-off their challenge for a second continental crown against the Gambia at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium on Monday.

The Al Hilal defender led the Teranga Lions to success in Cameroon two years ago and they have set their sights on lifting the trophy again.

“We are going to start this Africa Cup of Nations with a lot of humility,” Koulibaly said in a press conference on Sunday.

“We want to make the history of Senegalese football by winning this second star.

“This match against Gambia will be like a final for us. We even have three finals to play in this group.”

Koulibaly also talked up the presence of young stars in the Senegalese national team including 20-year-old Lamine Camara who won the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations and the African Nations Championship last year.

The average age of Aliou Cisse’s team is 26.93 years and they are the ninth oldest team in the tournament.

“These young people are up to the task, we also have experienced players, it’s a mix that will allow us to give our best, it’s a good thing to allow the players to invest more, we are the team to beat, we will take it game by game,” Koulibaly said.
