AFCON 2023: South Africa’s Mudau counting on Sundowns’ continental success

Khuliso Mudau is counting on the continental success of Mamelodi Sundowns as South Africa prepare to compete at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Sundowns had a successful season on the on the continental club scene with the women’s team winning the CAF Women’s Champions League for the second time in the space of two years while the men’s team, which Mudau plays, lifted the Inaugural African Football League.

South Africa have been paired in Group E alongside Namibia, Tunisia, and Mali. Though Mudau acknowledges it will not be an easy group, he believes that the quality in the Bafana team will aid their cause.

“It won’t be an easy group to get out of, but I think we have quality in the squad with players who are young and hungry,” Mudau told the CAF website.

“We want to make sure that we write history together. I think it will help us a lot to have players who play in the Champions League. You can’t compare it with the local league because the intensity is not the same.

“So I think it’s going to help us a lot. We have been playing together for quite a while now as a team and I am just grateful to be here and want to showcase my talent”

South Africa have been crowned AFCON champions once, coming on home soil in 1996 when they defeated Tunisia in the final.
