Ghana football mourns as Black Stars player Dwamena passes away on the pitch

The Ghana football community has been thrown into mourning by the tragic death of Black Stars forward Raphael Dwamena who slumped and died during an Albanian Superliga match on Saturday.

Dwamena who was playing for his club, FK Egnatia against KF Partizani, collapsed in the 23rd minute and was confirmed dead upon arrival in the hospital. 

The 28-year-old had suffered heart problems in the past but he has been playing with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator. 

The Ghana international missed his transfer to Brighton and Hove Albion after failing his medical examinations and he previously collapsed during an Austrian Cup match in October 2021. 

On Sunday, Ghanaian Football Association mourned the 28-year-old who scored two goals for the Black Stars on his debut against Ethiopia in June 2017.

“Our thoughts are with Raphael Dwamena’s family in this difficult moment. He proudly represented us 9 times and scored 2 goals. Rest in Peace, Raphael,” the Ghana FA wrote on Instagram.
