2024 Olympics Qualifiers: Super Falcons thrash Ethiopia in Abuja to qualify for third round

Nigeria’s women’s national team, the Super Falcons, defeated Ethiopia 4-0 at the MKO Abiola stadium in Abuja in the second leg of their second-round tie of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games qualifiers on Tuesday.

Randy Waldrum’s side secured a 5-1 aggregate win after initially playing out a 1-1 draw at the Abebe Bikila Stadium in Addis Ababa last Wednesday in the third round of the qualifiers.

Atletico Madrid forward Rasheedat Ajibade, who captained the side, bagged a second-half brace, while five-time African Women Footballer of the Year Asisat Oshoala and US-based Uchenna Kanu each scored a goal.

Racing Louisville forward Kanu gave the Falcons the lead in first-half stoppage time with a deft finish from close range after latching on to a through ball from French-based defender Tosin Demehin.

The nine-time African champions doubled their lead through Ajibade in the 50th minute, marking off an assist from Oshoala, who provided the 23-year-old forward with two assists in the game. Ajibade struck the ball into an empty net after fine play from Oshoala down the right side.

The Barca women’s forward registered her name on the scoresheet in the 68th minute, rising highest to connect to Kanu’s cross.

Four minutes later, Ajibade completed her brace and got the Falcons’ fourth as she combined with Oshoala once again, with the latter sending in a cross from the right.

The Falcons will face the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon next in the third round after the latter defeated Uganda 3-0 to go through 3-2 on aggregate.
