Late Slimani strike earns Algeria draw with 10-man Egypt

Islam Slimani scored in added time as Algeria played out a 1-1 draw with rivals Egypt in an international friendly in Abu Dhabi on Monday night

The Desert Foxes thumped Caper Verde 5-1 in their previous friendly while the Pharaohs defeated Zambia 1-0 also in Abu Dhabi.

Things started on a bad note for Egypt against Algeria as Mohamed Hany was given a straight red card for a dangerous foul on Ahmed Touba. That however did not deter the fighting spirit of the seven-time Africa Cup of Nations champions as Hamdi Fathi gave them the lead in the 62nd minute, connecting with Ali Mossad’s nodded effort from a Trezeguet free kick.

It seemed Egypt were going to hold on for an heroic win but it was not to be as substitute Islamani popped up with the equaliser deep in added time with a powerful header from Youcef Atal’s cross. It was his second goal in as many games for Algeria in added time after doing likewise with the fifth goal against Caper Verde last time out.

In other friendlies played on Monday, Kenya were held to a 2-2 draw with Russia in Antalya, Turkey. The Harambee Stars were the second African side the Russians played in this international window after defeating Cameroon 1-0 last week.

Alexander Sobolev gave the Russians the lead against the Kenyans in the eighth minute before Anthony Akumu and Masoud Juma scored in the space of 20 first half minutes to give the East Africans the edge. It remained 2-1 in their favour until the 89th when substitute Ivan Oblyakov leveled things for the Russians.

Reigning African champions Senegal meanwhile, recorded a 1-0 win over five-time AFCON winners Cameroon courtesy of Sadio Mane’s 35th penalty
