Rennes forward Gouiri dumps France to play for Algeria

Rennes forward Amine Gouiri has announced his intentions to represent Algeria on the international scene after playing for France across all youth levels.

The 23-year-old former OGC Nice forward declared his commitment to the Desert Warriors with a post on his official social media platforms on Tuesday.

The post read: “With pride, I announce my decision to join the Algerian national team.

‘I will defend with my body and soul the Fennecs jersey, to carry high the colors of our country and help write the next pages of its rich history.

“My years spent in the France team will forever be etched in me. Thank you for everything. Time to start a new chapter.

“Long Live Algeria.”

Gouiri, who starred for France’s youth teams from under-16 to under-21, is now set to join Djamel Belmadi’s side in the upcoming international window.

With Algeria hoping to win their third Africa Cup of Nations title and their second in the last three tournaments, Gouiri’s addition will provide fresh firepower to their attack in their quest for glory at the 2023 AFCON in the Ivory Coast next January.

Although he has scored once in seven games for Rennes this season, his 17 goals and 8 assists in 47 matches last campaign prove that the French-born forward can do damage up front for Algeria as he finally puts an end to speculations around his international future.
