Europa League: Aubameyang’s brace seals draw for Marseille in six-goal thriller

Gabon forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice for Marseille in their 3-3 draw at the Johan Cryuff Arena against ten-man Ajax in the Europa League on Thursday night.

The 34-year-old former Arsenal and Chelsea forward scored his third and fourth goals for the one-time European champions since he joined them on a free transfer this summer.

Former Manchester City starlet Carlos Borges opened the scoring for Ajax following an error from DR Congo international Chancel Mbemba to register his first strike for the club. Dutch forward Steven Berghuis doubled the home side’s lead in the 20th minute with a fine strike for his first goal since April.

Three minutes later, French fullback Jonathan Clauss halved the deficit for Marseille with a well-taken solo effort. Eight minutes after the half-hour mark, Aubameyang got his first goal of the game with a fine strike into the bottom corner, beating Dutch goalkeeper Jay Gorter to draw his side level.

Six minutes after the halftime restart, Kenneth Taylor restored Ajax’s lead with a low strike past Spanish goalie Pau Lopez after fine work down the right from Borges.

Aubameyang drew Marseille level once again with a peach of a finish. After he received the ball on the left wing from French midfielder Jordan Veretout, the Gabon international drove into the box, beating two Ajax defenders before sending in a thunderous strike into the top corner.

Though Marseille had the most shots on target and created the most chances, the home side held on to share the spoils despite losing Dutch midfielder Silvano Vos after he was sent off late in the game.

Aubameyang has now scored 26 goals in the Europa League and becomes the second-all-time top scorer in the competition, just behind Radamel Falcao (30).
