Hannibal Mejbri has taken to social media to react to scoring his first goal for the Red Devils in their 3-1 home loss to Brighton &Hove Albion in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
United had no answer to slick and brilliant play of the Seagulls who went ahead through former United player and Anglo-Ghanaian forward Danny Welbek in the first half.
Ghana full-back Tariq Lamptey then provided two assists for Pascal Gross and substitute Joao Pedro to compound Man United’s misery.
Mejbri came on for Casemiro seven minutes before Brighton’s third goal and scored his first United goal in the 73rd minute with a long range strike from outside the box that gave Jason Steele in goal for Brighton no chance of stopping.
The beautiful goal was not enough to rub off what was a disappointing afternoon at the Threatre of Dreams for United which Mejbri clearly highlighted in his Instagram post.
“Years of work went into that moment to score a goal for this incredible club. Impossible to enjoy it without the team getting the result we wanted,” the 20-year-old Tunisian said.
It was Mejbri’s fourth senior appearance for United since making his debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers on the final day of the 2020-21 season. He spent the 2022-23 season on loan at Championship side Birmingham City, playing 41 times in all competitions, scoring once and providing six assists.
Mejbri has also been capped 26 times for the Tunisia national team, playing a key role in the Carthage Eagles run to the final of the FIFA Arab Cup last December. He also featured at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in January last year and played in every game during the 2023 AFCON qualifiers with the Eagles making it to finals in the Ivory Coast next January for the 16th consecutive time.
