Premier League: Zouma’s header sends West Ham top of table

French defender Kurt Zouma scored the winner for West Ham United as they withstood a late barrage to take home all three points in their league clash against Luton Town on Friday night.

The former Chelsea defender rose highest to head in James Ward-Prowse’s corner kick in the 85th minute to put the Hammers two-nil up as they ruined Luton’s homecoming at the now-revamped Kenilworth Road in their first home match in the top-flight in 31 years.

English forward Jarred Bowen put David Moyes’ men in front in the 37th minute, heading home Lucas Paqueta’s cross for his third league goal of the season.

Although Luton pulled one back late in the game through Danish center-back Mads Joachim Andersen, the Hatters were unable to get a second to prevent defeat as they fell to their third straight loss in the Premier League.

West Ham’s victory meant they maintained their unbeaten start to the season with three wins and a draw. They currently have ten points and are one point ahead of defending champions Manchester City, who are on nine points and have played a game less.

The Hammers will face Pep Guardiola’s side next at the London Stadium in two weeks after the international break, while Luton will visit Craven Cottage to face Fulham.
