Transfer Deadline Day: Dutch midfielder Gravenberch joins Liverpool from Bayern Munich

Liverpool have announced the signing of Dutch midfielder Ryan Gravenberch from Ajax Amsterdam on a long-term deal worth €40 million.

The 21-year-old will sign a five-year contract with Jurgen Klopp’s side after spending just one season with German champions Bayern Munich.

“I’m very happy,” Gravenberch said. “Very happy that the deal is done and I’m finally here.

“If you see it from the outside, it’s one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“Also the fans, the stadium, I think everything from the outside is top. So that’s why [it was the right club].”

At Bayern, Gravenberch won the Bundesliga and the DFL Super Cup, but he found ample playing time tough to come by. He played 34 matches for the Bavarians last season but started just six of those games and has only managed nine minutes in their opening three games of the new campaign.

He made his Netherlands debut in March 2021 and has received eleven caps and scored just one goal.

Gravenberch’s move to Anfield on the summer transfer deadline day makes him Liverpool’s fourth summer signing after Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis MacAllister, and Japanese midfielder Wataru Endo.

“I’m really looking forward to [being at Anfield] and I can’t wait to hear the You’ll Never Walk Alone song,” the Dutch midfielder said.

“Now we start fresh again, a new start, and I’m going to give my all for this club.

“My ambitions are to win prizes. To win prizes, play a lot and show them who we are and who I am.”

He will join fellow Dutch compatriots Virgil Van Dijk and Cody Gakpo in Klopp’s set-up as they look to regain their form and perform better than the previous season.

Gravenberch will wear the jersey No. 38 for the Reds, the same number he wore during his time at the Allianz Arena.
