Letsile Tebogo claimed the silver medal in men’s 100 metres final of the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, finishing behind Noah Lyles.
The Motswana finished seventh in the semi-finals in a time of 9.98 seconds, ahead of Kenyan Ferdinand Omanyala who qualified in eighth place in a time of 10.01 secs while the Nigerian duo of Seye Ogunlewe and Usheoritse Itsekiri missed out by running in a time of 10.12 and 10.19 seconds respectively. It was however a disappointment for South African Akani Simbine who was disqualified for a false start.
Tebogo lowered his time in the final by 0.10 seconds which is a new national record and finished 0.05 seconds behind gold medalist Lyles. Great Britain’s Zharnel Hughes took home the bronze medal by finishing with Tebogo’s exact time but was behind by a thousandth of a second while Jamaica’s Oblique Seville finished fourth in three thousandths of a second.

American Christian Coleman was fifth and Japanese-Ghanaian Abdul Hakim Sani Brown was sixth. Omanyala crossed the finish line in seventh in a time of 10.7secs ahead of Jamaica’s Ryiem Forde in eighth and last place.
There was more joy for the African continent in the men’s 10,000 metres as Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei won his third consecutive world championship gold medal in a season best time of 27 minutes, 51.42 seconds. Kenya’s Daniel Ebenyo took the silver by finishing a thousandth of a second ahead of Ethiopia’s Selemon Barega.

Kenyan star Faith Kipyegon was also through to the final of the women’s 1500 metres after finishing on top of the semi-finals in a time of 3 minutes, 55.14 seconds, ahead of Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji and Ethiopian-born Dutch Sifan Hassan who also finished in the 3 minutes, 55 secs mark.
The final will hold on Monday and it will be live on Afrosport on Free TV Channel 730 in Nigeria and online via VIDIVU TV.
