It was a mixed feeling for Team Nigeria on the opening day of the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest as Favour Ashe was disqualified in the heat of the men’s 100m.

Ashe beat the gun in heat 5 of the men’s 100m and he was adjudged for a false start in a race won by Jamaica’s Oblique Seville.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s other representatives Seye Ogunlewe and national champion Usheoritshe Itsekiri advanced into the semi-final of the men’s 100m.

Ogunlewe finished third in Heat 1 of the 100m with a time of 10.07 seconds, behind Great Britain’s Zharnel Hughes while Itsekiri managed to take third in the second heat with a time of 10.17 seconds.

He finished behind USA’s Noah Lyles and Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya who clocked 9.95 seconds and 9.97 seconds respectively.

Ogunlewe and Itsekiri will return to the track in Budapest for the men’s 100m semi-final scheduled for 12.10pm (West African Time) on Sunday.
