Spanish-Nigerian teenager Omorodion scores on Granada debut

Samu Omorodion scored on his debut for newly-promoted Granada as the Andalusian outfit suffered a 3-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the final game of the opening La Liga round matchweek on Monday night.

The 19-year old Spaniard, born to Nigerian parents, is a product of the Nazaries academy and has spent the past two seasons with the reserve team, scoring 18 goals in 36 appearances.

He made his first senior appearance against Atleti on Monday night, starting alongside Myrto Uzumi.

Diego Simeone’s side took the lead in added time of the first half through Alvaro Morata before Samu equalised for Granada in the 62nd minute from close range after a brilliant assist from Gonzalo Villar.

It didn’t take too long for Atletico to restore their lead with Dutch-Ghanaian winger Memphis Depay scoring five minutes later before Marcos Llorente made it 3-1 to the Spanish capital outfit in the eighth minute of added time.

Granada are back in La Liga after relegating at the end of the 2021-22 season and won the La Liga 2 in 2022-23 to gain instant promotion back along with Alves.

Samu, whose full name is Samuel Omorodion Aghehowa, played for the entire 90 minutes. He has been capped at U-19 level for Spain and featured during the Euro U-19 Championship this summer in Malta. He made four appearances as La Rojita reached the semi-finals but lost 3-2 to Italy. He scored his first goal in a warm-up friendly against Mauritania that ended with a 4-0 win.
