Olympic champion Mu mulling over 2023 World Athletics Championships or vacation

Olympic champion Athing Mu is unsure of her participation in the women’s 800 metres event at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

The 21-year-old is considering the option to forgo this year’s Championships which starts on August 19, to continue her preparations for Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Mu’s coach Bobby Kersee confirmed she is training in Los Angeles for the next two weeks and she will either leave for Budapest or vacation next.

“It’s in our control if we decide we’re just going to go ahead and train through this year and focus on next year, then that’s what we’re going to do,” Kersee told LA Times.

“The training is going well but our thought process, openly, is that we’re going to just train here in L.A. for the next two weeks and the next time she gets on the plane it’ll either be on vacation or to Budapest.”

Mu became the youngest woman to own Olympic and world titles in an individual athletics event after winning gold in Tokyo 2020 Olympics and 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon.

Mu’s absence would leave Kenya’s Mary Moraa a chance to better her third-place finish at the 2022 World Athletics Championships.
