Women’s World Cup: Waldrum believes Super Falcons can win title

Revelation Cup: Super Falcons coach Waldrum upbeat despite loss to Mexico

Nigeria coach Randy Waldrum believes his team stand a chance to win the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 in Australia and New Zealand.

Waldrum led the 11-time African champions to a fourth-place finish at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and he is upbeat about helping the country surpass the quarter-final stage in the competition.

The Super Falcons’ challenge for the Women’s World Cup trophy will begin in Group B with their opening match against Canada scheduled for July 21.

“Can Nigeria win the World Cup? Absolutely,” Waldrum told FIFA. “But are we right now one of the top six or eight teams in the world? I’d have to answer that we’re not there yet.

“If we want to consistently do what England is doing, the US, or another of those top teams, there are things we still need to get better at. That’s the goal that I have.”

The Super Falcons ended their long wait for action since April with a friendly match on Saturday with an 8-1 win against Australian club Lions FC.

Waldrum who has been in charge of the team since 2020, added that the Super Falcons job is demanding with a lot of expectations from Nigerians.

“There’s always pressure for Nigeria. You’ve got a nation that’s very passionate and sometimes the people are going to be happy, sometimes they’re not,” the American coach added.
