CAFCL: Wydad Casablanca and Al Ahly set for final rematch

CAFCL: Wydad, Al Ahly claim victories in rescheduled games

Wydad Casablanca will face Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League final, a rematch of the 2022 final, after their away goals victory over Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday.

The defending champions had played out a 1-1 draw at home last week, making the return leg against the determined Brazilians more difficult.

After a goalless 45 minutes at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, Sundowns took the lead in the 50th minute through Themba Zwane before Ayoub El Amloud levelled the tie 22 minutes later.

There was time for late drama as Peter Shalulile restored Sundowns’ lead with 11 minutes left on the clock only for Mothobi Mvala to put the ball in his own net in the 83rd minute.

The game ended 2-2 and 3-3 on aggregate but Wydad qualified by virtue of the away goal rule. Al Ahly meanwhile defeated Esperance 1-0 on Friday and 3-0 on aggregate.

Wydad defeated Al Ahly 2-0 in last year’s single-leg final. It returns to a two-legged final this year holding on June 4 and 11 with Al Ahly enjoying home advantage first.
