The semi-final games of the 2022-23 CAF Confederation Cup will be played on Wednesday Tanzania’s Young Africans taking on South Africa’s Marumo Gallants while Ivory Coast’s ASEC Mimosas battle the last team standing from North Africa, USM Alger.

Ahead of the match-ups in Dar es Salaam and Abidjan, Afrosport curates things to know about the semi-final games and the secondary African club competition this campaign.

An end to Morocco’s dominance: For the first time since 2017, no Moroccan club will be playing in the final of the Confederation Cup. Raja Casablanca and RS Berkane dominated the competition in previous years winning four of the last five edition with Egypt’s Zamalek lifting the cup once in 2019.

Clash of the top scorers – Mayele and Chivaviro: The first semi-final match between Young Africans and Marumo Gallants will bring the two leading scorers in the Confederation, Gallants’ Ranga Chivaviro and Fiston Mayele of Yanga together at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium.

Chivaviro boasts of six goals in the competition while Mayele has five goals to his name, including a brace that powered Young Africans to a 2-0 victory against Rivers United.

History in sight: The four semi-finalists are seeking to lift the CAF Confederation Cup for the first in their history. ASEC Mimosas’ only continental success was in the 1998 CAF Champions League before lifting the CAF Super Cup a year later.

Marumo Gallants, founded in 2021, are targeting their first major title while Young Africans are the first Tanzanian club playing in the Confederation Cup last-four stage.
