How Salah became Premier League’s highest-scoring left-footer

Two-time African Footballer of the Year Mohamed Salah made history on Monday night as he became the Premier League player with the most goals scored with the left foot after netting twice in Liverpool’s 6-1 bashing of Leeds United.

The Reds were keen to end a five-game competitive winless run (D2 L3) since a 7-0 annihilation of Manchester United last month, in which Salah starred with a brace.

The Egyptian was in the mood to score at Elland Road on Monday night and did so with the second and fourth goals which were assisted by Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo respectively.

Jota, himself, got a brace while Gakpo and substitute Darwin Nunez completed the scoring.

Salah’s two goals took him to 107 left-footed goals in the Premier League, two more than Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler who scored 105 left-footed goals during a 14-year top-flight career that spanned spells with the Reds, Leeds United and Manchester City.

Salah will definitely score more goals with his left foot as he has a contract at Anfield that runs until the summer of 2025 which means his record could be hard to catch in years to come.

The former Chelsea man has 15 league goals this season and 26 goals in all competitions.

The only active Premier League player on the top 10 list for most left-footed goals is Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez who has 65 goals and ranks fifth behind the retired Robin van Persie and Ryan Giggs.

Belgian-Congolese striker Romelu Lukaku, Daniel Sturridge, and Louis Saha are the other players of African descent on the top 10 list.
