Cape Town Tigers: The South African champions hunting for BAL glory

Based in the South African city of Gauteng, the Cape Town Tigers are a young basketball outfit looking to prey on as much success as they can get their hands on.

The club was established in 2019 by American business partners Chante Butler, Raphael Edwards, Dia Martin and William McFarlan with the aim of developing a professional basketball team that would compete in the Basketball African League in five years.

This objective has already been achieved with the Tigers set to play in the Nile Conference of the 2023 Basketball Africa League (BAL) in addition to their dominance in the South African National Basketball Championship, a tournament they won in 2021 and 2022.

In September 2021, the Tigers overcame the Jozi Nuggets to claim their first national championship, a game in which Ben Uzoh got 22 points. The team also competed in the BAL qualifiers for the first time.

A national championship title defence was successful for the Cape Town Tigers over a year later.

The Sandton-based club finished the 2022 campaign on a high and they clinched a second consecutive spot in the Basketball Africa League after getting the better of the City Oilers in the semi-finalist.

The Cape Town Tigers project is also an attractive business proposition as renowned Nigerian music star, Mr. Eazi followed in the footsteps of global music act Jay Z, a shareholder in the Brooklyn Nets, to own shares in the South African organization.
