U-20 AFCON: Flying Eagles thump Tunisia to win bronze medal

Nigeria’s U-20 men’s team, the Flying Eagles, ended their journey at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt with a bronze medal after defeating Tunisia 4-0 in the third-place match at the Cairo International Stadium.

The Young Eagles came into the game needing to redeem themselves after a disappointing defeat to the Young Scorpions of Gambia in the semifinals on Monday, while Tunisia lost to Senegal.

Ibrahim Beji Muhammad opened the scoring for Nigeria, tapping into an empty net in the 9th minute, following controlled possession by Ladan Bosso’s side.

Flying Eagles No. 9, Ahmed Abdullahi, who had quite an eventful tournament after being sent off in the opening game, atoned for his penalty miss in the semifinals with a well-taken strike to double Nigeria’s lead immediately after the restart.

Jude Sunday, who started his first game of the tournament, won the Man of the Match award and capped off his excellent performance with a brace.

The win meant the Flying Eagles ended with a podium finish while Tunisia finished in fourth place. Despite the scoreline, both teams have booked their places in the U-20 FIFA World Cup in Indonesia.
