2022 NFL Honors: Mahomes leads award winners with second MVP

2022 NFL Honors: Mahomes leads award winners with second MVP

Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes was the biggest winner at the National Football League (NFL) awards ceremony held on Thursday.

Mahomes was voted as the 2022 Most Valuable Player in the NFL, an honour that did not come as a surprise to many as he was in inspiring form all through the regular season. This is his second award in the league (2018) since being drafted with the 10th overall pick in 2017, and he becomes just the ninth quarterback in the history of the NFL with multiple MVP awards.

In not so close voting splits, the 27-year-old defeated his Super Bowl LVII rival and Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback Jalen Hurts, Buffalo Bills offensive leader Josh Allen, and one of the NFL’s best wide receivers, Justin Jefferson, to win the most-talked-about award in American football.

He led the Chiefs offense, which was the best in scoring in the NFL at 29.2 points per game, to the joint-best record in the regular season with 14 wins and three defeats.

Mahomes had a quarterback rating of 105.2, led the league in passing yards (5,250) and touchdowns (45), and had a 67 percent pass completion rate.

He would be heading into Sunday’s much-anticipated Super Bowl as a two-time NFL MVP and one-time Super Bowl MVP, as he looks to make even more history when he and Hurts line up as the first pair of black quarterbacks to start in a Super Bowl and also with the hopes of being the first black quarterback to win two Vince Lombardi Trophies.

Apart from being one of the nominees for the MVP award, Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jefferson was voted as the NFL’s best offensive player and has been a revelation since he came into the league in 2020. He has recorded 324 receptions for 4,825 yards and 25 touchdowns across 50 career games.

He led the NFL in receptions (128) and yards (1,809), had eight touchdowns and a 69.6% catch rate, and only dropped five of 184 passes targeted at him during the regular season.

San Francisco 49ers defensive end and three-time Pro Bowler Nick Bosa overcame Dallas Cowboys outside linebacker Micah Pearson to win the NFL defensive player of the year award for his effort on the other end of the field.

Bosa led the league with 18.5 sacks, recorded an NFL-high 98 overall pressures, had 48 quarterback hits, and finished the regular season with 19 tackles for loss.

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was honoured with the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award for his work in the community and the adversities he has gone through, including a career-threatening ankle injury.

Prescott has done so much work on helping to prevent suicide after he lost his brother in that manner, and the impact of his humanitarian projects is felt throughout the country.
