FA Cup: Akpom’s goal not enough as Brighton sink Middlesbrough

Akpom leads Championship scorer’s chart in Middlesbrough victory

Chuba Akpom continued his goalscoring run for Middlesbrough on Saturday. but they were sent packing out of the FA Cup as they lost 5-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion in the third round.

Middlesbrough have been in top form in the Championship since Michael Carrick took over at the end of October 2022, with Akpom scoring nine goals so far and he has a total of 13 Championship goals which makes him the league’s top scorer.

Brighton got things off early at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday afternoon, starting with Pascal Gross in the eighth minute.

Akpom responded five minutes later, connecting with Ryan Giles’ cross and heading the ball in.

Adam Lallana made it 2-1 in the 29th minute followed by a second half brace by 2022 FIFA World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister and Deniz Undav putting the final nail in the coffin two minutes from time.

The result sends Brighton to the fourth round of FA Cup while Middlesbrough will turn their attention to next Saturday’s Championship game at home to Millwall with Akpom expected to be in action.
