Transfer: Cunha leaves Atletico Madrid for Wolves

Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers have announced the signing of Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha on a short-term loan deal from Atletico Madrid.

The 23-year-old has completed an initial loan move with a purchase option at end of the season for a fee in the region of £35 million.

Cunha, will join the Midlands club from January 1 subject to work permit approval.

The Brazilian has endured a frustrating campaign in the 2022-2023 season so far, with 17 appearances and just two starts in all competitions for Atletico Madrid and he was omitted from Brazil squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Wolves, in a statement, revealed details of the deal.

“The Brazilian international flew to the UK and completed his medical earlier in the week, finalising a loan move which will automatically become a permanent deal until 2027, should certain clauses be triggered,” it read.

Cunha will be Julen Lopetegu’s first signing at Molineux since his appointment in November.

After losing summer signing Sasa Kalajdzic to a ruptured cruciate ligament injury and with the trio of Diego Costa, Raul Jimenez, and Hee-Chan Hwang struggling in front of goal, Cunha’s addition is expected to boost the attacking line that has scored only eight Premier League goals this season.

Wolves are currently bottom of the Premier League after 15 games; with 10 points, two wins and nine losses.
