Jubilation as Argentina return home with World Cup trophy

Newly-crowned world champions Argentina have touched down on home soil with the iconic FIFA World Cup following their historic triumph in Qatar.

Argentina won the global competition for the first time in 36 years after defeating 2018 champions France 4-2 on penalties last Sunday.

The Argentine government declared Tuesday, December 20, as a bank holiday in the country, and the Albiceleste players arrived to jubilant cheers from fans at the Ezeiza International Airport in Buenos Aires.

Argentina captain and Golden Ball winner Lionel Messi led the squad out of the plane, followed closely by Argentine Football Association President Claudio Chiqui Tapia and manager Lionel Scaloni.

The national contingents landed home at 6:24 a.m West African Time, with proud fans lining the streets as they travelled on an open-top bus to their football association’s headquarters in Viamonte.

The main event is scheduled for today at midday at the capital city’s Obelisk monument.
