500 wrestlers to storm Tunisia for African Wrestling Championships

Over 500 wrestlers from across the continent are expected to in the Tunisian city of Hammamet for the 2023 African Wrestling Championships.

The annual wrestling championships will run from May 15 to 20 with wrestlers drawn from 20 countries alongside 25 judges.

The 38th edition of the African Wrestling Championships will feature 30 events and Egypt lead the ranking of all-time winners with 316 gold medals followed by Tunisia with 151 gold medals and Nigeria are the third-best country in the annual competition with 123 gold medals recorded since it started in 1969.

In the 2022 ediiton that took place in the Moroccan city of El Jadida, Egypt came overall first in the men’s freestyle, men’s Greco-Roman while Tunisia edged Nigeria in the women’s freestyle.

Nigeria are expected to participate in this year’s championships with the country’s representatives camped in Bayelsa State capital city, Yengoa under the tutelage of Cuban trainer Angel Pineda of United World Wrestling.
