2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Bendel Insurance goalie Obasogie get maiden call up to replace Okoye

Ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming matches against Lesotho and Zimbabwe in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Bendel Insurance goalkeeper Amas Obasogie has been called up to join the team, replacing Udinese shot-stopper Maduka Okoye.

Okoye, who recently got recalled into the Super Eagles setup, has pulled out of the nation’s first Group C games, leading to Obasogie getting his maiden call-up.

The Insurance goalkeeper has been one of the best in the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) since they returned to the top flight last season, and his brilliant performances have caught the eye of Jose Peseiro.

Obasogie has kept 15 clean sheets in 30 NPFL matches since the beginning of the 2022–23 season, including six in seven games this season and conceding just one goal in that period.

The 23-year-old is now expected to join up with the rest of the squad at their training base in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, ahead of the two international matches, as he will also link up with fellow home-based goalkeeper Olorunleke Ojo of Enyimba and Cyprus-based Francis Uzoho.

The Eagles are slated to face the Crocodiles of Lesotho in their qualification group opener on Thursday, November 16, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo. Three days later, they will make a trip to Rwanda to face the Warriors of Zimbabwe at the Huye Stadium in Bature on November 19.
