2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Awoniyi departs Nigeria’s camp, to miss Zimbabwe tie with injury

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has departed the Super Eagles camp after reportedly picking up an injury in their 1-1 draw against Lesotho at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Thursday.

The 26-year-old, who was replaced by OGC Nice forward Term Moffi just before the hour mark in Nigeria’s group opener in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, has reportedly suffered a groin injury.

The news of his injury and departure was made known on the official X (formerly Twitter) platform of the Super Eagles.

Awoniyi will miss the Eagles’ next game against Zimbabwe at the Huye Stadium in Rwanda, having returned to England to meet with his club doctors.

The former Liverpool and Union Berlin man recently returned to action after suffering the same injury in Forest’s Premier League encounter against Crystal Palace back in September.

Nigeria will take on the Warriors on Sunday, November 19, with the tie set to kick off at 2 p.m. Nigerian time.
