2026 WCQ: ‘We cannot drop any more points’ – Super Eagles captain Troost-Ekong

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong says the team is ready to fight hard for all maximum points against Zimbabwe, Afrosport reports.

The three-time African champions are up against the Warriors on Tuesday in matchday six in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

Nigeria currently sits fourth in the group with six points, having claimed their first win in the group following last Friday’s 2-0 victory against Rwanda in Kigali. They are three points above bottom-placed Zimbabwe and four points behind group leaders South Africa, who as things stand will pick up the sole ticket in Group C.

Troost-Ekong, who made his first appearance in the World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda, is adamant the team cannot afford to drop any more points, starting with grabbing a win in Uyo on Tuesday.

“We are looking forward to a win,” said the Al-Kholood defender. “The three points are important to us.

“At this stage, we cannot afford to drop any more points. Our aim is to take it one match at a time, collect three points here and there and hope fervently that these will be enough to get us the ticket.”

The Super Eagles seemed out of the race for a ticket to the 2026 World Cup slated to be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico, but a win on matchday five has put them back in contention.

Other games in the group will see leaders South Africa take on second-placed Benin in a crucial clash at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan, while Lesotho will head to Kigali to battle Rwanda.
