National champion Olayinka Olajide has claimed Nigeria’s first medal in athletics at the ongoing 13th African Games after finishing third in the women’s 100-metre final on Tuesday.
Olajide, participating in her first senior international tournament for Nigeria, claimed the Bronze medal with a time of 11.55 seconds, to become the first woman in over a decade to clinch a podium finish at the Games.

The 21-year-old finished behind 2019 silver medallist Gina Bass of Gambia, who ran a time of 11.36 seconds (-1.5) to claim the gold medal, and Liberia’s Maia McCoy, who settled for he silver medal with a time of 11.49 seconds.
Nigeria’s other representative in the women’s 100m final, Justina Eyakpobeyan, finished in fifth place with a time of 11.60 seconds.
