2023 African Games: Offiong Edem claims Nigeria’s first medal in table-tennis

Team Nigeria have started the Accra 2023 African Games on a bright note with Offiong Edem securing the country’s first bronze medal in the women’s table-tennis singles event.

Edem secured a spot on the podium after losing to Egypt’s Dina Meshref in the semi-final game on Wednesday.

The 37-year-old last won a medal in the women’s singles event at the African Games when she claimed gold in the Maputo 2011 African Games.

Edem has represented Nigeria at four Olympic Games (2004, 2012, 2016 and 2020) and she is bidding to qualify for the Paris 2022 Olympic Games later in the summer.

Meanwhile, it will be an Egyptian final after Hana Goda dislodged her Algerian counterpart, Lucie Mobarek 4-1.
