The 2022 National Sports Festival in Delta State was declared opened by President Muhammadu Buhari who was represented by Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare at the Stephen Keshi Stadium on Wednesday.
The opening ceremony featured radiant parades from all participating states including the Federal Capital Territory and also music performances from guest artists Ruger and Harry Song.
In his address delivered by Mr Dare, President Buhari called on the private sector to support the development of the sport in the country.
Host Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa charged the participating athletes to aim to set new world records in Delta State and assured athletes living with disabilities of ample provisions for their events.
Also in attendance in Asaba for the opening ceremony were Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, Governor Duoye Diri of Bayelsa State, and Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State among other sporting dignitaries.
Earlier on Wednesday, Team Delta claimed the first gold medal in the 21st edition of the tournament by winning the 12km mixed relay in cycling. Team Oyo and Team Plateau cyclists followed closely in the second and third positions respectively.
The National Sports Festival will run in the city of Asaba till December 1o.
