France icon Zinedine Zidane has confirmed he would like to be in charge of Les Bleus in the near future, Afrosport reports.

The 53-year-old of Algerian heritage has been widely tipped to replace Didier Deschamps who announced he will be leaving the team after the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

Zidane has been without a job since leaving Real Madrid in 2021 and has been widely circulated he has refrained from taking up any jobs at club level to enable handle France after Deschamps. He has however not confirmed if those rumours are true.

“I’m sure I’ll get back into coaching. I’m not saying it’s going to happen now, what I want one day is to coach the national team,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

He added: “The most important thing is to have a passion for football and to want to pass on something to your players, what you have in you, deep within you.

“A coach has an important role in the success of his team. In my opinion, his energy and desire are 80 per cent of whether things go well.”

Zidane famously scored twice as France defeated Brazil 3-0 to win the 1998 World Cup on home soil.

He won 11 titles in two spells as Real Madrid boss, including two La Liga and three consecutive UEFA Champions League crowns, the only manager to win three in a row.
