Yamal: Flick rules teenager out of Barcelona home opener against Valencia

Barcelona will be without with Lamine Yamal for Sunday’s La Liga fixture against Valencia due to injury problems, and the teenager is a doubt for their Champions League opener, Afrosport reports.

Yamal reportedly missed Barcelona’s training session on Saturday morning, despite featuring in both of Spain’s matches during the international break. He started for La Roja in their World Cup qualifying fixtures against Bulgaria and Turkey.

Speaking to reporters, manager Hansi Flick confirmed that the 18-year-old will be unavailable for this weekend’s match and criticised the Spain’s coaching staff for their usage of the player.

“No, he will not be available,” Flick said. “It’s a shame. He went to the national team in pain, and was given painkillers to play.

“He played 79 and 73 minutes; that’s not taking care of the players. Spain has the best players in every position. It would be worth taking care of the young players. I’m sad about the situation.

“It’s just a minor discomfort in his pubic bone. He won’t be available for the match and is doubtful for Newcastle.”

Yamal had started Barcelona’s three opening league games this season, scoring two goals and registering two assists. He will be sidelined for their home opener against Valencia at the Estadi Johan Cruyff, and could miss their trip to St James’ Park to face Newcastle in the Champions League on 18 September.
