West Ham appoint Nuno after sacking Potter with club in relegation zone

West Ham United have parted company with Graham Potter after a miserable start to the campaign, with the club moving swiftly to appoint Nuno Espirito Santo as his successor, Afrosport reports.

The Hammers have endured a torrid opening to the season, taking just three points from their first five Premier League matches. Saturday’s announcement brings an end to Potter’s tenure after only eight months in charge, with the club currently sitting 19th in the table.

Potter leaves having overseen 25 games since his appointment in January, managing just six wins and suffering 14 defeats. The Hammers finished 14th under his guidance last term and were also knocked out of the League Cup in the second round this season by Wolves.

In a statement, the club said: “Results and performances over the course of the second half of last season and the start of the 2025/26 season have not matched expectations, and the Board of Directors believe that a change is necessary in order to help improve the team’s position in the Premier League as soon as possible.

“The Club can confirm that Assistant Coach Bruno Saltor, First Team Coaches Billy Reid and Narcis Pelach, Lead Goalkeeper Coach Casper Ankergren, and Goalkeeper Coach Linus Kandolin have also left with immediate effect.

“The Board would like to thank Graham and his coaching staff for their hard work during their time with the Hammers and wish them every success for the future. The process of appointing a replacement is underway. The Club will be making no further comment at this time.”

West Ham’s hierarchy, meanwhile, have long admired Nuno, who left Nottingham Forest earlier this season following a breakdown in his relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis.

The Portuguese coach has signed a three-year deal with the Hammers and will take charge of his first game on Monday when they visit the Hill Dickinson Stadium to face to Everton.

Nuno enjoyed greater success with Forest last year, leading them to a seventh-place finish — their best top-flight position since 1994-95 — and securing European qualification for the first time in three decades. Despite departing the City Ground after only three games this term, he has made a rapid return to Premier League management.

The Sao Tome-born coach said: “I am very pleased to be here and very proud to be representing West Ham United.

“My objective is to work hard to get the very best from the team and ensure that we are as competitive as we possibly can be. The work has already started and I am looking forward to the challenge that is ahead.”
