WAFCON 2024: CAF increases tournament prize money ahead of Morocco kick off

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a significant boost in the prize money for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set to take place in Morocco from 5-26 July 2025, Afrosport reports.

The African football body has doubled the winner’s prize money and increased the total purse by 45%, in line with its “commitment to the development and growth of Women’s Football in Africa,” as stated by CAF president Dr. Patrice Motsepe.

The winner of this year’s WAFCON will take home $1,000,000, up from $500,000 in the previous edition. The runner-up will earn $500,000, while third- and fourth-place teams will receive $350,000 and $300,000, respectively.

Each of the four quarter-finalists will pocket $200,000; third-placed finishers in the group stage will earn $150,000, while the three teams that finish fourth in the group stage will receive $125,000 each.

This new development boost brings the total prize money for WAFCON 2024 to $3.475 million, the highest in the tournament’s history.

Morocco will host the tournament for a second straight year, with 12 teams battling for the crown. The Atlas Lionesses will kick off the WAFCON 2024 on Saturday against Zambia at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.
