Vinicius: Real Madrid star breaks silence after El Clasico drama

Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior has issued a heartfelt apology for his behaviour during Sunday’s El Clasico, where he reacted angrily to being substituted in the second half of their 2–1 win over Barcelona, Afrosport reports.

The Brazilian was visibly furious when his number appeared on the substitution board in the 72nd minute, as he made way for compatriot Rodrygo Goes.

Cameras captured the 25-year-old shouting, “Always me! I’m leaving the team! It’s better if I leave, I’m leaving,” before storming down the tunnel. He later returned to the bench as tensions briefly flared on and off the pitch.

Head coach Xabi Alonso declined to comment on the incident after the match, but Vinicius took to social media on Wednesday to apologise to the club and its supporters.

“Today I want to apologise to all the Madridistas for my reaction when I was substituted in the Clasico,” he wrote on X.

“Just as I have already done in person during today’s training, I also want to apologise again to my teammates, the club, and the president.”

He added: “Sometimes, passion gets the better of me because I always want to win and help my team. My competitive character stems from the love I feel for this club and everything it represents.

“I promise to keep fighting every second for the good of Real Madrid, as I have done since the first day.”

Reports in Spain indicate that the forward will not face any formal punishment from the club, despite the public nature of the outburst. However, fans have noted that his message did not include any mention of Alonso, further fuelling speculation of tension between player and manager.

Since Alonso’s arrival in June, Vinicius has started 10 of Madrid’s 13 matches across all competitions but has only completed the full 90 minutes three times.

The Brazil international has scored five goals and provided four assists this season, though his role in Saturday’s league clash against Valencia remains uncertain.
