Valverde dismisses claims he refused to play in Real Madrid’s Champions League win

Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde has debunked rumours suggesting he refused to play during Tuesday’s 5-0 Champions League victory over Kairat Almaty, Afrosport reports.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dani Carvajal both sidelined through injury, Raul Asencio was deployed at right-back in Kazakhstan.

Reports suggest Valverde, who has deputised in the position on numerous occasions for Madrid, had informed manager Xabi Alonso of his displeasure to play in the fullback spot.

Valverde, who has often filled in at full-back for Madrid, was left on the bench and accused of declining to warm up before and during the match. Photos of the Uruguayan standing with his hands behind his back on the touchline fuelled the speculation.

The 27-year-old, linked with a move to Manchester United, took to social media on Wednesday to clear the air and reiterate his commitment to the team.

“I have read several articles damaging my reputation,” Valverde wrote on X. “I know I’ve had bad games, I’m aware of it. I’m not hiding, and I face the criticism head-on. I’m truly sad.

“People can say many things about me, but under no circumstances can they say that I refuse to play. I have given everything and more for this club; I’ve played while fractured, injured, and I’ve never complained or asked for a break.

“I have a good relationship with the coach, which makes me feel confident enough to tell him which position I prefer on the pitch, but I always, always made it clear that I’m available to perform anywhere, on any trip, and in every game.

“I’ve left my heart and soul in this club and I will continue to do so, even if sometimes it’s not enough or I’m not playing as I’d like. I swear on my pride that I will never give up and will fight until the end, playing wherever I’m needed”.

Valverde joined Madrid from Penarol in 2016 and has made his way from the youth ranks to the first team. He is currently the vice-captain and has made over 300 appearances for Los Blancos, winning 14 trophies, including three La Liga titles and two Champions League crowns

The midfielder has already provided three assists in eight appearances this season, starting seven of Madrid’s six La Liga games, and his role in Saturday’s clash with Villarreal remains to be seen.
