Kylian Mbappe’s blistering start to the season continued as he scored two penalties in Real Madrid’s 2-1 UEFA Champions League win over Olympique Marseille with 10 men on Tuesday, Afrosport reports.
The Champions League is the most prestigious title missing in the Frenchman’s cabinet and started Los Blancos’ quest for a 16th crown when he equalised from the penalty spot in 29th minute after Timothy Weah put Marseille in front five minutes earlier.
Real were reduced to 10 man after Dani Carvajal, who replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold in the fifth minute, received a straight red card for headbutting Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli in the 72nd minute.
It marked the third game this season the Spanish giants have had a player sent off, the most recent coning in their previous La Liga game against Real Sociedad.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Xabi Alonso’s men had the edge as Mbappe converted again from the spot in the 81st minute for his 50th goal in 64 games in the white shirt.
He also took his Champions League tally to 56 goals in 88 games, going level with Ruud van Nistelrooy on the all-time scorer’s list.
