Tottenham Hotspur have condemned the online racist abuse targeted at Mathys Tel following their penalty shootout loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, Afrosport reports.
Spurs were 2-0 up for the bulk of the game in Udine, with goals in either half from defenders Micky van de Ven and Cristian Ronero. PSG however found their way back thanks to late goals from Kang-In Lee and G0ncalo Ramos to level the match 2-2.
The French giants went on to win the penalty shootout 4-3, with Tel missing one of the two penalties for Tottenham, the other being Van de Ven.
New signing Tel was the subject of racist comments online for his miss, and the Lillywhites, in a statement on X, were disgusted by the comments and have taken steps to identify the individuals responsible for the vile act.
“We are disgusted at the racial abuse that Mathys Tel has received on social media following last night’s UEFA Super Cup defeat,” read the statement.
“Mathys showed bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty, yet those who abuse him are nothing but cowards – hiding behind anonymous usernames and profiles to spout their abhorrent views.
“We will work with the authorities and social media platforms to take the strongest possible action against any individual we are able to identify. We stand with you, Mathys.”

The abuse by Tels follows a similar incident after England lost the shootout in the Euro 2020 final to Italy, with Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford, all suffering racist abuse online for missing their spot kicks.
Tottenham will now turn their attention to their Premier League opener at home to newly-promoted Burnley on Saturday.
