Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet secured a remarkable double by winning the women’s 5000m at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Afrosport reports.
The 25-year-old, who also won the 10,000m event a week ago, claimed victory in 14:54.36 to achieve the same feat she did at the Paris 2024 Olympics. She ended her hunt for a first world title, having already won silver and bronze at Eugene in 2022 and Budapest in 2023.
Chebet produced another top-class performance at the Japan National Stadium to outpace her teammate and close friend Faith Kipyegon, the reigning 1500m champion and defending 5000m title-holder.
Italy’s Nadia Battocletti led into the final lap, with Chebet and Kipyegon poised just behind. The Kenyan pair surged clear in the closing stages, and Chebet found another gear to secure the title and claim Kenya’s fifth gold medal at the championships.

“Running with the likes of Faith and Nadia, you just have to believe in yourself,” said Chebet. “Today was not an easy race. I came here without pressure and I knew I should not stress myself. If you lose or win, you need to believe in yourself and in being able to come back stronger.
“It will be amazing bringing home gold and silver to Kenya. Me and Faith have been friends for a long time. We motivate each other and I am really pleased with our performances.”
The Kenyan becomes only the third woman to complete the 5000m-10,000m double at the same World Championships, joining Tirunesh Dibaba (2005) and Vivian Cheruiyot (2011).
Her triumph adds to an extraordinary collection that already includes Olympic crowns at both distances, the world cross country title, world road 5km title, and world records over 5000m, 10,000m and 5km on the road.
Kipyegon, meanwhile, settled for silver in 14:55.07, while Battocletti, runner-up in the 10,000m, added another medal with bronze in 14:55.42.
