Team Nigeria arrives Algeria for maiden African School Sports Championship

Nigeria’s contingent of student-athletes has arrived safely in Annaba, Algeria, ahead of the maiden African School Sports Championship, which will be held from July 26 to August 5, 2025, Afrosport reports.

The delegation, made up of 60 student-athletes, is accompanied by their coaches and representatives of the National Sports Commission (NSC).

These young athletes, selected from various schools across the country, will compete in 10 different sporting events, including athletics, swimming, football, taekwondo, beach canoe, badminton, basketball 3×3, beach volleyball, cycling, and table tennis. The breakdown includes 12 athletes for athletics, 8 for swimming, 18 for football, and smaller numbers in the other disciplines.

Before their departure, the team underwent intensive training at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

Organised by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), the African School Sports Championship is designed to promote Olympic values among African youth and establish a solid foundation for talent discovery, development, and integration from an early age.

In adherence to tournament regulations, all Nigerian participants submitted valid school certificates. The NSC, in partnership with the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), also ensured that parental consents were secured for all underage athletes, working closely with families.
