Sheffield Wednesday served winding-up petition for failing to pay taxes

Sheffield Wednesday charged by EFL for failure of paying player wages

Struggling EFL Championship club Sheffield Wednesday will be served imminently with a winding-up petition over money owed to the United Kingdom’s tax agency, HMRC, Afrosport reports.

According to BBC Sport, the Yorkshire outfit are owing HMRC £1 million and the winding-up petition could pile pressure on owner Dejphon Chansiri to sell the club.

The Thai businessman bought the club 10 years ago and has been absent from the public eye throughout this financial turmoil.

Wednesday are currently under five embargoes from the EFL after failing to pay wages promptly in five of the last seven months which led to the departure manager Danny Rohl departed in July and no pre-season games.

Rohl’s assistant Henrik Pedersen took charge 10 days before the season started and fans have held protests during games, boycotting the home EFL Cup ties against Leeds United and Grimsby Town, while the supporters’ trust urged fans not to buy refreshments in the stadium.

The Owls are currently second from bottom in the Championship with six points from nine games and will visit Charlton Athletic on Saturday.
