Salah hits landmark goal as Liverpool end losing run with win over Aston Villa

Mohamed Salah reached another milestone in his glittering Liverpool career as the Reds beat Aston Villa 2–0 at Anfield on Saturday to end a poor run of results and climb back into the Premier League’s top three, Afrosport reports.

The Egyptian star opened the scoring just before half-time, capitalising on a loose pass from Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez to fire home his 250th goal for the club.

Ryan Gravenberch added the second after the break with a deflected strike to seal Liverpool’s first win in three games in all competitions.

Salah’s goal underlined his status among Liverpool’s greatest forwards as only Ian Rush (346) and Roger Hunt (285) have ever reached that mark in the club’s history.

The strike also saw him equal Wayne Rooney for the most goal contributions in the Premier League for a single club. The Egypt international now has 188 league goals and 88 assists for Liverpool since joining from Roma in the summer of 2017.

“It’s a great feeling to score goals for such a big club, it’s something I don’t take for granted,” he told TNT Sports after the game. “I’m so proud and happy about that achievement.”

On the victory, the 33-year-old added: “It’s very important [to get the win today], we’ve had a few losses in the Premier League and Champions League. I’m glad we are back on track now, and it’s a big push before some important games.

“It’s a very tricky season for us because we have a few new players, they are very good players but they need time to adapt. We lost some players too. It takes time to adapt and know each other’s games, but everything will be fine.”

It was a much-needed response from Arne Slot’s side after a difficult few weeks and brought relief for the manager, who praised his players’ determination.

“What I liked most was everybody here felt the importance of the game,” the Dutchman said. “I’m talking about my players and the fans. The players showed up – although they had their [early] chance, which hit the post. The fans and players felt this was the moment today to show we’re still there.”

The result ended Liverpool’s four-game losing streak in the Premier League and restored belief ahead of a demanding run of fixtures. Next up for the Reds is a Champions League meeting with Real Madrid, followed by a league clash with Manchester City.

For Villa, the defeat halted their four-game winning run and dropped them to 11th in the table. Unai Emery’s side will look to regroup quickly as they prepare to host Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Europa League on Thursday before facing Bournemouth at the weekend.
