Records tumble as Egyptian duo dominate 2025 ITTF Africa Championships

Omar Assar and Hana Goda continued Egypt’s dominance in African table tennis with historic wins at the 2025 ITTF Africa Championships in Tunis on Wednesday, Afrosport reports.

Assar claimed his fifth Men’s Singles title, while 17-year-old Goda became the youngest African to win three consecutive Women’s Singles crowns.

In one of the tournament’s most thrilling matches, Assar was pushed to the limit by compatriot Youssef Abdelaziz in the final, before rallying to victory in a five-set classic. Goda, meanwhile, produced a commanding 4-0 win over Dina Meshref, sealing her place as the continent’s rising superstar in a under an hour.

“Winning this year’s title wasn’t easy – it was mentally tough,” Goda said. “The scoreline might look simple, but the match was intense. I’m proud to become the first African woman to win three consecutive singles titles.”

Assar, who now holds a record 14 singles titles in Africa, reflected on his dramatic win, “This final reminded me of the roller-coaster matches I’ve had with [Quadri] Aruna, where I had to come back from 3-1 down. Today, I stayed focused and kept telling myself not to give up — I needed this badly. I’m proud to win my fifth title, marking my 14th singles title in Africa. I hope to make it to 15 soon.”

Egypt’s dominance extended beyond singles as they swept all three doubles events — Mixed, Women’s, and Men’s Doubles.

In Mixed Doubles, Youssef Abdelaziz and Mariam Alhodaby defended their title with a straight-sets win over fellow Egyptians Mostafa Badr and Marwa Alhodaby, recording scores of 11-4, 11-7, 11-9.

Goda teamed up with Meshref to capture the Women’s Doubles crown, defeating the Alhodaby twins, Mariam and Marwa, 3-1 (11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 11-4) to claim their first title together.

In the Men’s Doubles, Abdelaziz and Mohamed El-Beiali beat Algeria’s Bella Maheidine and Jellouli Milhane 3-1 (11-7, 8-11, 11-6, 11-2) to complete Egypt’s clean sweep.
