Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has been handed a one-game suspension for his red card in their La Liga match against Alaves, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced Tuesday.
Mbappe lunged in with a reckless tackle on Alaves’ Antonio Blanco in their 1-0 league win on Sunday and was sent off in the 38th minute after a VAR review.
The federation’s disciplinary committee said that the Real Madrid No. 9 received the one-game ban for “violent conduct.”
The RFEF’s leniency on the French striker follows the report by referee Cesar Soto Grado, who stated that the challenge had taken place “while disputing the ball.”
The report placed Mbappe’s possible punishment between one and three games, with the RFEF disciplinary committee going for the lower end of the stick.
Mbappe will only miss Madrid’s next La Liga match against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday, with Los Blancos trying to unseat leaders Barcelona.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men, with 66 points, are four behind their Catalan rivals with seven games remaining in the season.
